Design That Feels Like a Friend
Bumble, a global dating app, launched a new app just for making friends—called Bumble For Friends. To help it stand out from the dating version, the app needed a new look that feel like a cool, welcoming place for finding new friendships.
14 Characters and 35 Icons
Over the course of one month, a brand-new group of 14 illustrated characters was created. Each character features 18 different poses, such as waving, dancing, or holding a phone, as well as group scenes where they hang out together. These characters were designed to appeal to Gen Z users and make the app feel more playful and human. The team wanted to ensure the visuals were consistent everywhere—from the app to website, promotional to functional use. For that, an illustration system was developed. That means there are big full-character illustrations for key moments, and also smaller emoji-style icons for functional use such as buttons.
